Arrival
Pudong (PVG) for most international flights, Hongqiao (SHA) for domestic hops and high-speed rail — they're linked by Metro Line 2 and the Maglev. Both accept 240-hour visa-free transit.
Where to stay with a foreign passport
Jing'an, the Bund/Huangpu and the former French Concession (Xuhui) have the deepest stock of foreigner-friendly hotels in the country. Refusals are rarer here than anywhere — but budget listings still vary; verified map in progress.
Getting around
The metro is the most foreigner-friendly in China: English signage everywhere, single-ride tickets take coins, and Alipay/WeChat transit codes work with foreign cards. Taxis are plentiful — the taxi card generator works perfectly here.

Most consulates cluster in Jing'an/Xuhui. If you're in Shanghai for visa paperwork, go early, bring printed appointments, and expect no electronics inside.

Why did a hotel refuse me? Can they do that?
Hotels must register every foreign guest with the local Public Security Bureau within 24 h. Smaller properties lack the system or license (外宾接待资质), so they simply say “不能接待外宾”. Since 2024 the authorities state hotels cannot refuse foreign guests — if it happens, call/SMS 12345, and look for an international chain or licensed hotel like the ones on this map.
Do I need to register my stay?
Hotels register you automatically at check-in. Staying in a private apartment? Register at the nearest police station (派出所) within 24 hours (72 h rural). It's quick and free.
What about payments and apps?
Set up Alipay and/or WeChat Pay with your foreign Visa/Mastercard before flying — this removes the biggest pain point. DiDi (ride-hailing) has an English app and also lives inside Alipay. Google Maps works poorly in China; Apple Maps (AutoNavi data) and Amap are reliable. Full payments guide →
