Arrival
Two airports: Capital (PEK) and the huge star-shaped Daxing (PKX) — check which one before you book, they're 70 km apart. Both accept 240-hour visa-free transit. The Airport Express links both to the metro.
Stations are not interchangeable
Beijing West, Beijing South, Beijing朝阳 Chaoyang and Beijing North serve different high-speed lines. Foreign passports use manual counters at ticket checks — arrive 40+ minutes early. Our station guides walk through each one.
Where to stay with a foreign passport
Chaoyang (Sanlitun/CBD) around the embassy district, Wangfujing/Dongcheng for the sights, and Haidian for universities. International chains across all three register foreign passports routinely. Verified map in progress — until then the same rule applies: refundable booking plus a chain backup.
The Great Wall without a tour

Why did a hotel refuse me? Can they do that?
Hotels must register every foreign guest with the local Public Security Bureau within 24 h. Smaller properties lack the system or license (外宾接待资质), so they simply say “不能接待外宾”. Since 2024 the authorities state hotels cannot refuse foreign guests — if it happens, call/SMS 12345, and look for an international chain or licensed hotel like the ones on this map.
Do I need to register my stay?
Hotels register you automatically at check-in. Staying in a private apartment? Register at the nearest police station (派出所) within 24 hours (72 h rural). It's quick and free.
What about payments and apps?
Set up Alipay and/or WeChat Pay with your foreign Visa/Mastercard before flying — this removes the biggest pain point. DiDi (ride-hailing) has an English app and also lives inside Alipay. Google Maps works poorly in China; Apple Maps (AutoNavi data) and Amap are reliable. Full payments guide →
